Read the actual notice immediately

Identify who issued it, the property address, the stated reason, and every date or required response. A warning, demand to correct a lease issue, and court document are different things. Preserve the complete notice, including how and when it was delivered.

Do not assume buying an ESA letter stops the notice or court process. Contact an appropriate local housing adviser or legal service promptly with the document available.

Build a short, dated record

Write when the animal arrived, when you requested an accommodation, what information you submitted, and what the property said. Include relevant lease terms, delivery confirmations, payment records, and incident evidence. Label what is known and what remains disputed.

If the request is still pending, tell the adviser that. If no request has been made, explain the situation honestly rather than backdating paperwork. A provider’s support promise is not a substitute for responding to an actual legal deadline.

Use the right professional for each issue

A clinician may clarify whether documentation is appropriate or verify an existing letter through a suitable process. A housing adviser can assess the notice, available responses, and relevant law. A trainer or veterinarian may help with animal behavior or care concerns.

Review the 2026 housing context and your state guide as background. Do not withhold rent, ignore a hearing, or assume an animal can remain solely because a generic article says ESAs are protected. The immediate goal is to understand and respond to the real notice while preserving an accurate accommodation record.
