Hawaii distinguishes housing assistance animals
Hawaii’s Act 154 of 2022 addresses assistance animals in housing and includes emotional support within that framework. It also addresses verification when the relevant disability or need is not apparent. Read the housing provisions as housing provisions; they do not turn a letter into universal public-access or airline documentation.

Plan the move as several separate tasks
If you are relocating to Hawaii, keep three questions on different lines of your checklist: the animal’s transportation and entry arrangements, the clinical evaluation, and the housing accommodation. Obtain current travel and entry information from the responsible carrier and authorities. Do not assume that a housing letter completes those processes.
Tell the clinician where you will be during the appointment. Moving between your current home and Hawaii can affect which professional can provide the service and when.
Organize the property conversation
Identify whether you are requesting an exception from a landlord, an association, or a campus housing office. Send the relevant accommodation information to that decision-maker and retain the response. For an association-managed home, save both the governing animal rule and any separate rental instruction.
Ask the evaluator about the appropriate verification route before releasing health information. If documentation is issued, retain the original and have the professional correct errors. A receipt for an ESA package is not a substitute for the property’s written decision or a plan for the animal’s arrival.
