Start with what the animal does

A dog may be deeply important to someone without being a service dog. Under the ADA, service-animal status depends on trained work or tasks related to disability. Simply providing comfort through presence does not satisfy that task element.

An emotional support animal is discussed in relation to a person’s need for support. A therapy animal is commonly part of visits or programs that support other people. These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable marketing labels.

Psychiatric service dogs are service dogs

A psychiatric service dog performs trained tasks related to a psychiatric disability. The distinction is the dog’s work, not whether the disability is visible. Calling an animal a PSD, buying a “PSD letter,” or putting a service-dog patch on a vest does not teach those tasks.

If you are exploring that path, discuss your needs with an appropriate professional and evaluate the practical demands of training. Do not treat an unsuccessful ESA housing request as a reason to relabel an untrained animal.
